and Bentonite

Clays are obtained as an auxiliary material from kaolin mining, kaolin washing or the processing of other materials.

Secondarily washed clays and kaolins, as well as concrete clays, clays with lignite additives, brick clays, cypris clays, porous and heat-resistant ceramic kaolinitic clays, rock clays with an increased alkali component content, binding clays and illite-montmorillonitic to montmorillonitic clays currently used as raw materials for the potential production of sorbents are used for further processing.

Another important activity of Sedlecký Kaolin, a.s. is the processing of bentonite and bentonite clays. Bentonite is a soft, fine-grain, inhomogeneous rock that particularly consists of a clay mineral called montmorillonite. Montmorillonite provides the bentonite with its characteristics – great sorption ability, internal swelling capacity when in contact with water, bonding ability and high plasticity. Bentonites are used for many purposes.

Bentonite use

  • Litter for cats and other small household pets to absorb liquids and odours is made of bentonite.
  • In the construction industry, bentonites are used for casing suspensions, clay-cement mixtures, and drilling and insulation operations. Bentonites are added to concretes and plasters. Bentonite is used as a filler in the production of paints.
  • Bentonites are added as plastifiers in ceramic mixtures.
  • In the foundry industry, bentonite is used as a bonding agent for moulding mixtures.
  • Bentonites are also used in wastewater treatment processes.
  • In agriculture, bentonites are used as bonding agents in the production of feedstuff, composting and soil fertilizing.
  • Bentonites are also used in the food processing industry in, for example, wine or cider fining and beer stabilization.
  • The pharmaceutical industry utilizes bentonites as plastifiers in the production of ointments, pills and cosmetic creams.
